What is a VDR System?

VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) is the maritime version of the black box airlines employ. The system typically consists of two components comprising a data collection unit as well as a deck-mounted protection pod designed to withstand shock and fire, deep-sea pressure, and penetration. It is typically used to record incidents during navigation, but it can also provide valuable data for heavy weather damage analysis and monitoring performance as well as crew training.

Up-grading

Many ships with VDR/SVDR meet the minimum regulatory requirements. However, members are encouraged to use the equipment to record near misses, conduct investigation into incidents, and for preventative maintenance. There are also packages that can extend the time duration during which VDR data will be accessible beyond the minimum of 12 hours. A decision must be taken as to whether or not to upgrade.

The system is built around an industrial grade computer that performs many functions like processing and encoding the information gathered by the sensors. The capsule is designed to survive any kind of accident and to store the data. The VDR system is made up of a data collection device located on the bridge as well as a dedicated power supply, an interface unit, and backup batteries. The unit collects data from all integrated sources including microphones, which record bridge audio, and sends it to the Concentrator, where it is processed into a series look at here now of NMEA 0183 sentences are interpreted and encoded to be transmitted to the final recording medium.
